Mesoscopic fluctuating domains in strontium titanate

Spatial correlations between atoms can generate a depletion in the energy dispersion of acoustic phonons. Two well-known examples are rotons superfluid helium and Kohn anomaly metals. Here we report on observation large softening transverse mode quantum paraelectric $\mathrm{Sr}\mathrm{Ti}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ by means inelastic neutron scattering. In contrast to other known cases, this occurs at tiny wave vector implying spatial correlation extending over distance as long 40 lattice parameters. We attribute formation mesoscopic fluctuating domains due coupling local strain ferroelectric fluctuations. Thus, hallmark ground state insulating is emergence hybridized optical-acoustic Mesoscopic may play role tunneling, which impedes finite macroscopic polarization.
